El papel de los bancos centrales en la transformación de los mercados financieros

El fenómeno de la globalización financiera y el contagio rápido y uniforme que conlleva entre los diferentes mercados financieros internacionales, quedó en evidencia tras el estallido de la crisis de 2008, así como en los distintos episodios de estrés financiero experimentados desde entonces, tales como la crisis de la deuda soberana, el Brexit, la pandemia de COVID-19 y la guerra en Ucrania. A pesar de estos eventos específicos, la volatilidad en el período posterior a la crisis subprime ha sido baja en términos históricos, debido, entre otros factores, a las políticas monetarias de los bancos centrales, que, con sus aumentos en la oferta monetaria y tasas de interés bajas, han provocado un cambio profundo en la forma y el fondo de los mercados financieros, tanto a nivel nacional como supranacional. Sin embargo, tras la pandemia de COVID-19 y el estallido de la guerra en Ucrania, la inflación surgió abruptamente, colocando a los bancos centrales en una situación incómoda, obligándolos a subir las tasas de interés de manera rápida y contundente. En este trabajo, se realiza una estimación y cuantificación de los umbrales de volatilidad pre y postpandemia para cada uno de los principales índices bursátiles, con el fin de estimar los cambios en estas fronteras que afectan y determinan diferentes grados de contagio financiero. Además, este estudio busca determinar la posible relación causal entre los cambios en los balances de los principales bancos centrales y la volatilidad del mercado. Si tales relaciones existen, podrían marcar un antes y un después en la implementación de las políticas monetarias por parte de estas entidades bancarias.
